How to be a snob – Ivy League inspired decor

ivy_league_main2

Recently I took a day trip up to New Haven, Conneticut and took a few minutes to walk around Yale’s campus. It is a very beautiful gothic campus with tons of preppy, ivy league history. It inspired me to explore Ivy League-inspired decor. I am certainly not the first person to do this, for instance Ralph Lauren’s Rugby stores are based solely on prep school/rugby chic. Anyway, here are a few ideas for infusing that preppy, Ivy League look into a space.

1. Family Crest

What says illustrious tradition more than a crest? A family crest is a fun way to add a regal touch to a space. If your name is fairly common, you can order your real family crest online.

2. Record Player

Vinyl records have been making a comeback and so have vintage-inspired portable record players. The benefit of buying a new one rather than a real vintage record player is that it will work much better and you will still get the look you are going for. (Take it from me, I have a really cool looking vintage record player that doesn’t work!)

3. Horse Bookends

Ivy League and equestrian styles go hand in hand. What is more preppy than playing polo? These book ends would work great with your…vintage books! Read Number 4!

4. Vintage Books

Some genteel looking old books will create a library/study feel. Finding old books is pretty easy to do, but you might have to choose between buying books you actually like and just buying ones that look cool. I guess it depends on your priorities!

5. Vintage Trophies

Like vintage books, you can find old trophies just about anywhere – online, yard sales, etc. Maybe your parents even have a few good ones? The ones pictured are definitely not the cheapest you can find, but they do have a nice shape. Unfortunately, they have disappeared from the online store where I found them, but you can do a search on ebay or check out this site that is selling a few.

6. Tartan Blanket

Tartan is another thing that goes hand in hand with Ivy League and equestrian style. A pattern with Scottish roots, a tartan throw is a hint to the old country and of course, your illustrious heritage.

  3. I was studying something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read originally. I am still reflecting over the different points of view, but I’m tipped to a great extent toward yours. And regardless, that’s what is so superb about modern-day democracy and the marketplace of thoughts online.
